Well done! If you’re reading this, it means you’ve just made one of the most important life decisions you can make – wearing contact lenses. It might be hard to imagine life without having your glasses on you 24/7, but we can promise that this next step will be life changing in ways you could never have, literally, seen coming.
But first things first, it’s important that you learn and practice how to put your contact lenses in correctly.
Here’s a few contact lens tips for beginners:
Step 1: Clean your hands
Never touch your eyes or your contact lenses with unwashed hands, especially now more than ever. Make sure you wash your hands with fragrance-free soap and that you dry your hands with a clean microfiber towel to avoid lint or fuzz getting onto your eyeball.
Step 2: Open your contact lenses case one side at a time
Only open and manage one contact lens at a time to avoid losing or damaging any one of them in the process. It’s also a good idea to get into a routine about which eye you’ll start with first.
Step 3: Remove the contact lens carefully
Be careful when removing your contact lens from your lenses case. Gently press your finger down on the contact lens until it transfers to your finger, and then transfer the contact lens into your palm. NB: If your contact lens gets stuck in the case, gently tap the side of the case until it dislodges.
Step 4: Rinse your contact lens
Using contact lens solution only, rinse the contact lens by squirting a small amount of liquid over your contact lens that’s cupped in the palm of your hand. Check for any fine debris that might wash off of your lens. Once it’s totally clean, you may now get ready to insert your contact lenses.
Step 5: Place the contact lens
Whether you have colored contact lenses or normal contact lenses, place the contact lens so that it sits on your index finger like a bowl. Then, with your other hand, gently pull your lower eyelid down. It’s normal that your eyes might blink uncontrollably, but with practice, this will get easier. Once you’re ready, you can place the contact lens directly over your iris. The contact should easily slide onto the eyeball. Blink your eye a few times to make sure your lens is fixed in place.
And that’s it! You’re done with the one side, now it’s time to repeat the same steps with the other lens.
Contact lenses help you live life more freely than you’re used to with glasses. There should be zero pain or discomfort when wearing them. If there is, take them out immediately and consult your doctor. It’s also always a good idea to carry eyedrops with you for maximum comfort. We hope you enjoy this new lease on life as you learn to see things in a new light.
